DIS, standing for Design Innovation and Society, is a hands-on creative design program that addresses real-world problems. Offered at RPI, it is one of the world's only design programs based in an STS department, providing deep insight into the human dimensions of design problems and solutions. The dual major options are referred to as the "Interdisciplinary Programs in Design and Innovation" (abbreviated as "PDI"). DIS uniquely prepares students to tackle real-world problems and conceptualize revolutionary designs and technologies through its group oriented course work and iterative pedagogy. DIS is an interdisciplinary arena where students from diverse backgrounds converge to learn skills in the design process. The organization of students promotes communication between people of different knowledge bases and skill sets and fosters a recognizing for good design choices.
